The Creative Social Center is modelled on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. The goal we envisioned, when we started the Center in 1982 was to provide a place where seniors would feel they belong, acquire self-esteem and recognition and would have the opportunity to respond to their creative potential and personal growth.
Our journey begins with the need to belong. The Center is small, therefore we hold small classes, many activities are held in groups, where seniors have the opportunity to socialize and get to know one another, greet each other by name and often with a hug.
After belonging, we encourage self-esteem and recognition. In small groups, members participate in aerobics, art, choir, creative writing, folk dancing, recorder, sculpture, yoga and the Rabbi’s Parsha class. At our Annual Vernissage, exhibition and sale, of our paintings and sculptures, we fill the need for self-esteem. We also publish a bulletin containing articles written by participants of the Creative Writing Class. The bulletin is mailed to all our members. The choir, folk dance group and recorder students perform on holidays in the Center and in the community. Aerobic and yoga classes help in the need for self-esteem. Workshops focus on leadership and group skills. At all our activities, the teachers are facilitators.
We go on trips to museums, art galleries, and theatre. On an annual five day trip to Stratford or Niagara-On-The-Lake, we enjoy great theatre, have meals together, chat, share parts of ourselves and make new friends.
Every aspect of the Center is run by member volunteers, all members are welcome at Executive Committee meetings, at which decisions are made by concensus. Every member has a voice.
